Bangladesh Uni-Imperial-Drishty Debate Genius 2007







Dear all,

With an urge to bring out hidden talents Uni-Imperial-Drishty debate genius 2007- took place in the port city of Chittagong, a one of its kind contest, which is being held for the last three years. The final round took place on the 11th of September. On the morning of 31st August, 2007 the programme was inaugurated by Professor Syed Ahsanul Alam Parvez, Chairman, Centre for Good Governance. The day was presided by Masud Bakul, President, Drishty Chittagong, Rosangir Bachchu, Senior Sub-editor of the Daily Azadi Mr. Jahurul Islam and Chairman of Drishty debate society Mrs. Safia Gazi Rahman.
After the inaugural ceremony, 297 students from 27 schools of the metropolitan faced the 5 panel of judges for the primary selection of the second round. 32 contestants made their way to second round where 15 of them made it to the semi-finals.

The semi-final round took place on the 5th of September. The judges were Mr. Sanjeev Shaha, renowned debater and general secretary of Bangladesh Debate Federation, Dr. Masud Rana debater and physician, Dr. Sudeep Ranjan Dev and teacher Udity Das. The system practiced in this round was of the parliamentary form. After being faced by challenging odds in the semi finals, the fortunate debaters who could make it to the finals were Gunjan Barua. Takvirul Islam and S.M. Ehteshamul Islam (Collegiate School), Muttakin Chowdhury (Chittagong Govt. High School), Ragib Ahsan (Navy School), Tamanna Rashid Tumpa (Dr. Khastagir Girls School), Irfan Jaman Nur (St. Placid's High School) and Rubaiyat Binte Hasan (Chittagong Govt. Girls High School).

The final round was divided into two separate contests; one being held in parliamentary format, where the eight finalists debated on the topic. 'Bangladesh er Akash aaj kalo meghe Dhaka'. The famous TV host and former debater Dr. Abdun Nur Tushar presided the Speaker's chair. The other part consisted of Barowari format debate where the panel of judges were joined by Bishwajit Chowdhury (Asstt.-editor of the Daily Prothom Alo). The judges asked them questions from all around the globe. The final round was festooned by cheers and clapping from the audience. At the end of the programme, the veiwers' pole and judge marking crowned Tamanna Rashid Tumpa as the champion Muttakin Chowdhury was only a few marks shy from hers, which was followed by Ehteshamul Islam. The best talent and performance awards were given to Irfan Jaman Nur and Gunjan Barua respectively.

The awards were distributed by Syed Ahsanul Alam Parvez, Chairman of CGG & Imperial Group. Mr. Kashshaful Haque Shehjad, Vice President of Drishty Chittagong; Rashedul Amin Rashed and Saif Chowdhury, General Secretary of Drishty Chittagong. Jeba Feriha of Radio Foorti, Farhana Bobby of Karudhara & Noman Siddiky of Drishty CTG spoke for the students in the occasion. The programme was conducted by Afsana Rahman Toma, Shahidul Islam and Mujibur Rahman Moni.
