India Subhrojyoti-Somak Memorial Interschool Debate 2007















Dear all,

The Subhrojyoti-Somak Memorial Annual Interschool debate was held recently in the Chapel Hall. The topic was “Has India after 60 years of independence become a mature republic in terms of peace, progress and prosperity?” The participating schools were St James’, Don Bosco (Park Circus), Calcutta Girls High School, Loreto House, Our Lady Queen Of The Missions, La Martiniere (Boys), Modern High School and hosts Calcutta Boys’ School. The brainstorming debate session was interspersed by interjections and vehement rebuttals. A

n hour of fierce verbal contests culminated in Our Lady Queen of the Missions clinching the crown and Calcutta Girls High School emerging second. Arkayan Samajdar ( Don Bosco) and Vikramaditya Lakhotia (La Martiniere) jointly shared the honours as best speakers for and against the motion respectively. The programme commenced on a solemn note with a prayer by Rev N Prabhuraj followed by an inaugural address by Principal and Secretary of Calcutta Boy’s School Mr Mcgee.

A minute’s silence was observed in memory of the two youth who had died amidst tragic circumstances. The judges Mr Utpal Chatterjee, Mr Subir Ghosh and Mr Snehashish Sur, were assisted by Ms Ruchira Goswami, moderator for the event. Vice-Chancellor National University Of Juridical Sciences Dr MP Singh was guest of honour. The session drew to a close with the vote of thanks.
