China IDEA-XJTU International Debate Competition 2007

Dear all,

The "IDEA-XJTU International English Debate Competition" was the largest international English debating event ever held in China, with 104 teams and 208 contestants from America, Kazakhstan, Georgia and China, as well as more than 60 Chinese and foreign debate coaches and judges.

After two days of hard-fought round robin elimination rounds, the International University English-language Debate Contest, co-organized by XJTU and the International Debate Education Association (IDEA), ended with a day of championship debating on May 27. The team from Willamette University in the United States earned the title of overall champion of the competition, while the Beijing Foreign Language University team took first place among teams from non-English-speaking countries. Two teams from Jiaoda (XJTU one, consisting of Ju Xing and Shi Wenbo and XJTU two consisting of Zhou Xiaoqin and Zhu Qiuyu) took third and fourth place, respectively. A special friendship competition was won by a team composed of Chinese competitor Chen Zhaochao and an American teammate. The team in which XJTU student Xu Ruodan was paired with another American debater took fourth place in the same competition.

In the individual competition, American contestant David Joes was selected as the best debater overall. XJTU competitors Zhao Jing and Zhu Qiuyu were also honored. Pan Di from Tianjin Foreign Language University took first place in the individual competition among contestants from non-English-speaking countries, which also recognized the contributions of XJTU debaters Zhao Jing, Chen Dongnan, Xu Ruodan and Zhu Qiuyu.

During the course of the competition, which emphasized policy debates, the most successful debaters were those who made the best use of their intellect, experience, resourcefulness and teamwork. The competition was made possible through the cooperation of a number of XJTU professional schools, the Department of International Cooperation and Exchange, the Dean's office and the Communist Youth League Committee and was organized with the support of Xi'an International Studies University.
