India Inter-School Elocution Debate Competition 2007

Dear all,

It was a contest where girls once again emerged victorious. No, it was not the annual Board examination results, but an inter-school elocution debate competition for the Dandi March Rolling Trophy organised by Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti (GSDS) in Delhi on July 2nd. Girls won not only the first, second and third prizes but also four consolation prizes.

The competition saw participation of students from 45 schools of Delhi. Speaking at the elocution competition on ‘Global warming: Which weighs more, natural occurrence or human intervention?’, students expressed concern over global warming that has resulted in drastic climatic changes.

Stating that human greed has resulted in rampant destruction of nature , Priyanka Swami, a Class IX student of Shiv Vani Model School, Dwarka, said: “The release of carbon dioxide from burning of coal for generating power has been clearly identified as contributory factor to the catastrophic warming.”

Shiv Vani Model School took home the Dandi March Rolling Trophy-2007.

Addressing the children, GSDS vice-chairperson Tara Gandhi Bhattacharjee said Mahatma Gandhi had remarked that nature has everything for man’s need, but not his greed. “Bapu was a visionary, but it was his human side that made him the Mahatma,” she reminded the children.

The second and the third prizes went to Shallu Gupta, a Class XII student of St. Mary’s School, Dwarka, and Aditi, a Class IX student of Mayur Public School at Indraprastha Extension, respectively.
