Philippine Television Debating Championships 2007

Dear all,

The country’s top university debate teams will square off weekly for the honor in "Square Off: The Philippine Debate Championship’’ every Wednesday, 8-9 p.m., on ANC, the ABS-CBN News Channel, ongoing until Nov. 21 for the chance to represent the country in the 2008 World Universities Debating Championship, the largest and most prestigious international annual debate competition in the world.

The 16 universities fielding their best debaters are Ateneo de Manila University, University of the Philippines-Diliman, University of the Philippines-Manila, De La Salle University, College of Saint Benilde, University of Santo Tomas, Western Mindanao State University, San Beda College, Lyceum of the Philippines, University of the Philippines-Baguio, University of Baguio, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Ateneo de Davao University, Xavier University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, and the Mindanao State University.

The debates on ANC’s Square Off will use a short form of the British Parliamentary format used at Worlds, and will be moderated by ANC anchor Twink Macaraig.

The panel of judges will be made up of veteran debaters and accredited adjudicators, like 2001 World finalist, Atty. Enrique dela Cruz, 2006 Philippine Bar topnotcher, Joanne de Venecia, and Chief Adjudicator for the 2007 Philippine Inter-Collegiate Debating Championship, Carl Ng, among others.

Topics for debate on ANC’s Square Off will cover local issues and global concerns.

ANC’s partner in this project, Philippine Graphic, will send the winning team on an all expense-paid trip to Bangkok, Thailand, where this year’s Worlds will be held from Dec. 27 to Jan. 5. In addition, Philippine Graphic has committed to provide the winning team with two weeks’ intensive coaching before the trip to prep them for the international championship, where around 300 teams from around the world are expected to compete.
