Hong Kong Post-Secondary College Debate 2007 In Radio 1

Dear all,

Inter Post-Secondary College Debate Competition co-organised by Radio Television Hong Kong and The Hong Kong Federation of Students offers a platform for tertiary students in Hong Kong to demonstrate their debate potentials. Hong Kong Baptist University debated against their counterparts from The Chinese University of Hong Kong for the championship final at the piazza outside the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

The motion of the competition was ' Has Hong Kong become a better place ten years since its reunification with China? '. The Hong Kong Baptist University side was arguing for the motion, whereas The Chinese University of Hong Kong team took the other side. Arguments from both teams were forceful and persuasive, demonstrating extraordinary oratory power. After rounds of intense debates, The Chinese University of Hong Kong prevailed and won the championship, while both The University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Shue Yan University secured the Second Runner-up positions. The excellent performance of CHAN Ching-lok from The Chinese University of Hong Kong has won him the “Best Debater” award.

The judging panel was formed by the Hon Justice POON, Court of First Instance of the High Court, TSANG Yok-shing, Non-Official Member of the Executive Council (Member, Panel on Education), Patrick LAU, Legislative Councilor, Rimsky YUEN, Chairman, Hong Kong Bar Association and Gracie FOO, Acting Director of Broadcasting. They assessed the performance of the debaters with reference to their presentation skills, line of arguments, team spirit and instant responses.

Jace AU, Acting Head of Public Affairs Unit (Radio), RTHK, concluded that, “The Inter Post-secondary College Debate Competition has won high recognition among the tertiary schools in the past 24 years. It offers students the opportunity to exchange debate experience and train their critical mind and reaction in this atmosphere of free debate. The debaters are also much benefited from the constructive comments made by the adjudicators. In the future, the competition would keep abreast with time and continue to encourage campus-wide concern for the community.
