On 11 July, a debate competition was held between six participating teams from IOM shelter sites in Kalutara district. The competition was held at the newly built auditorium of the District Secretariat Office. The six-member teams debated on various topics ranging from the vices and virtues of technological improvement; the nutritious value of instant foods; and the positive and negative impacts of tourism in Sri Lanka.
The winning debate team came from the IOM transitional shelter site at Kalamulla. Second place went to students from the Purana Raja Maha-Vihara shelter site and the third place winners came from the Heenatiyangala shelter site. S.R. Charindu Madusanka from Kalamulla, was named the best debater of the competition. The top five debaters each received prizes while all participants were given smaller gifts and certificates of participation.
