Pakistan LUMS Olympiad Debate Championship 2007

Dear all,

Aitchison College students hoisted the trophy for maximum overall points in several competitions at the conclusion of LUMS Olympiad 2007 recently in Pakistan. The Froebel’s International School Islamabad was declared the runner up at the concluding ceremony held at the LUMS Sports Complex. Shields and certificates were awarded to the participants and winners. The four days of Olympiad brought together more than 500 students from across the country.

The competitions at the Olympiad included photography, drama, computer gaming, music, art, music video making, quiz and debates. Students from schools, colleges and universities all over the country participated in the contest. LUMS, playing the host, abstained from participation. The final round of the debating competition was held on Sunday. The event was marred by the frequent power outages but the debaters did not falter. The topic under debate was This House Prefers Cultural Relativism Over Universal Human Rights.

The popular stance was the superiority of human rights because they provided protection that culture and tradition could not. The University of Engineering and Technology Lahore’s team comprising Mohsin Khan and Rana Abdur Rehman were declared the tournament’s best debating team. Aitchison College, SICAS and KEMU’s debating teams were ranked second, third and fourth, respectively.

Regards,
Rashedul Hasan Stalin
